Cycling routes to Martinské hole

Cycling tourism is an increasingly popular way to explore the beauty of Slovak nature. One of the most attractive routes is the ride from Valčianska dolina to Martinské Hole, which combines a physical challenge with rewarding panoramic views and a great sporting experience. This guide will take you through the route, what to prepare, and what to expect along the way.

Before the ascent, it’s important to check your equipment. A mountain bike is recommended, as the route includes steep climbs and more demanding terrain. Basic gear should include a helmet, plenty of water, energy bars, and clothing suitable for mountain conditions.

From Valčianska dolina, the route first follows an asphalt road toward the village of Valča. Just before the village, turn into the pine forest. Here begins the climb along forest trails, which will lead you to the well-known Turiec route called the Tankodrom.

The Tankodrom is popular among cyclists for its conditions. Along this section, you’ll also find two interesting stops that are definitely worth visiting.

The first stop is the Lookout Tower below Bokšín. This tower offers stunning views of the Turiec region, Veľká Fatra, and the town of Martin. It’s an ideal spot for a short break.

A little further, above the village of Bystrička, is the second tower – Lookout Tower above Bystrička. Like the previous one, it provides panoramic views of Turiec, Veľká Fatra, and Martin. From this side, you also get a direct view of Veľká Lúky, also known as Martinské Hole.

After passing the Tankodrom and visiting the lookout towers, the route becomes more challenging again, especially during the final climb to Martinské Hole. The first ascent features a serpentine road with steep sections that will test your endurance and fitness. Most of this path is rocky, requiring extra caution and riding technique. About one-third of the way, you’ll come across a gazebo, an ideal spot to rest. A notable feature of this stop is a World War II cannon, which commemorates historical events in the region and adds a unique atmosphere to the break.

After conquering this part of the climb, you reach Martinské Hole, a popular destination for both hikers and cyclists, sitting at an elevation of 1,456 meters. At the summit, you can refresh yourself at the mountain chalet Javorina, known not only for its cozy atmosphere and traditional cuisine but also for its breathtaking views. From the chalet’s terrace, you can enjoy panoramas of the town of Martin, the Turiec region, the Kriváň section of Malá Fatra, and on clear days, even the High Tatras. This view is a well-deserved reward after a challenging climb.

You can take two options for the return journey:

  1. For adrenaline lovers, you can continue along the ridge of Malá Fatra to the summit of Veterné and then to the Maríková saddle, enjoying a thrilling descent back to Valčianska dolina and the Woodpark chalets. It’s important to stick to the main route or use our map, as there are many forest trail turnoffs along the way that could lead you into the wrong valley.

  2. For an easier alternative, take the asphalt road back through the Priekopa district, then follow the cycling path through the Stráne district, continuing all the way back to Valčianska dolina.
