Climb to Ostredok, Frčkov, Krížna, and Kráľova Skala

This trip takes you to one of the highest peaks of Veľká Fatra, offering breathtaking views. On a clear day, you can see not only the surrounding peaks but also distant areas of the Czech Republic and Poland.

Your adventure starts at the Woodpark chalets in Valčianska dolina. From there, cycle through the villages of Rakovo and Karlová until you reach Blatnica, the gateway to Gaderská dolina. The cycling route is 16.5 km, but if you want to save energy, you can drive to the start of the valley and continue by bike or on foot.

Gaderská dolina welcomes you with an impressive wooden gate. This valley is one of the most beautiful and longest in Veľká Fatra and represents an important natural treasure of the Turiec region. It is perfect for a family outing, a leisurely walk, or a cycling trip suitable even for children.

The route is easy, with occasional gentle climbs, and mostly follows an asphalt road. It is therefore suitable not only for hikers but also for strollers or rollerblades. The trail is marked with a yellow sign, but if you feel like exploring, you can briefly detour to other nearby attractions, such as Blatnica Castle.

During your cycling trip or walk through the valley, you will come across a spot called Mlynčekovo, where you can rest and recharge. Continuing further, you will reach the end of Gaderská dolina, where the road splits into Dedošova dolina and Selenec. From this point, it’s only about a ten-minute walk to Čertova brána, a unique rock formation worth visiting and taking a short break.

From the Ústie Dedošovej doliny crossroads, follow the left path, which will lead you into Dedošova dolina.

The entire route through Dedošova dolina enchants with its ease and natural beauty. The trail is of moderate difficulty, suitable for both cyclists and hikers. The valley offers tranquility and picturesque spots perfect for reflection or photography. The Gaderský Creek in Dedošova dolina features numerous small waterfalls, some reaching up to 2 meters in height.

Along the way, you will also see various rock formations and majestic cliffs. In some places, the creek flows over these rocks, creating beautiful natural corners. The valley has its own charm in winter, transforming into an icy kingdom. During frosty periods, you can admire numerous icicles and ice waterfalls, some reaching over 4 meters in height. Thanks to these impressive natural features, a winter visit to the valley is an unforgettable experience.

During our trip, we encountered about 30 cm of snow near the end of the valley, so we decided to lock our bikes at the Škap crossroads, near the former forester’s lodge. From there, we continued on foot for 2 km to the Drobkov crossroads, where the last forester’s cabin is located. From this point, you can choose two directions. We recommend following the green hiking trail to Ostredok, the highest peak of Veľká Fatra.

The hiking trail passes through forested areas with some steep sections. In winter, the trail is not dangerous, though it’s less frequented, but it is well marked, so there’s no need to worry. We recommend using crampons for potentially icy parts of the path.

After about a 30-minute climb, you will reach the first meadow, then continue through the forest to a second, larger meadow. Even if it seems like you’re at the top, you’re actually only halfway up. From here, however, you can enjoy stunning views of the Veľká Fatra ridge peaks, including Frčkov, Krížna, and Kráľova Skala. In winter, snow is deeper on the meadows, so it’s best to stay near the forest. On our trip, there was about 30–40 cm of snow, making it a truly magical experience.

After nearly an hour of climbing, you will reach the Sedlo za Štrochmi crossroads. From here, the ascent becomes gentler. In winter, there can be as much as half a meter of snow, while in summer the trail is clearly marked. At the end of the meadow, you will reach the summit of Ostredok.

Ostredok is the highest peak of the Veľká Fatra, standing at 1,592 meters above sea level. Located in the central part of the mountain range, it offers stunning panoramic views of surrounding peaks and valleys. The summit is grassy and treeless, providing an unobstructed view of Malá Fatra with its prominent peaks such as Kľak, Veľká Lúka, Malý and Veľký Kriváň, Chleb, and Veľký Rozsutec. On the other side, you can see Donovaly, the Low Tatras, and the High Tatras with the iconic Kriváň. On clear days, views extend to the Súľov Rocks and Babia Góra in Poland. Nearby, you can spot Tlstá and Ostrá, Pekárová, Kozia Skala, and Lysec, as well as the regions of Turiec, Liptov, Orava, Staré Hory, and Banská Bystrica.

Ostredok is a popular destination for hikers, accessible via several marked trails. The ascent is often combined with visits to the ridge sections of the Veľká Fatra, such as Krížna or Ploská. This peak is a symbol of the beauty and vastness of the Veľká Fatra. During winter, the area attracts many ski mountaineers.

The hike continues along the ridge to Frčkov, the second-highest peak of the Veľká Fatra, standing at 1,587 meters above sea level. The trail to it is almost flat. Although Frčkov is somewhat overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, which are usually the main destinations of hikes, you definitely won’t miss it on this route.

The trail continues along the Veľká Fatra ridge trail to another well-known peak – Krížna. Standing at 1,574 meters above sea level, Krížna is the third-highest peak in the Veľká Fatra. This prominent summit is an important junction for hiking routes, including the famous Cesta hrdinov SNP trail, and is a popular destination for hikers, cyclists, and ski mountaineers in winter. At the summit, there is a transmitter, and several benches are available for resting and enjoying the surrounding nature.

During the winter months, the slopes around Krížna are highly avalanche-prone, earning the peak the nickname “Mother of All Avalanches.” Despite this reputation, Krížna remains an iconic summit of the Veľká Fatra, attracting visitors throughout the year.

The hike continues along the Cesta hrdinov SNP trail toward Kráľova studňa and Kráľova skala, with the trail gradually descending from this point onward.

Kráľova Studňa is known for its several small springs, where you can refill water for refreshment during summer and winter, as long as there is no severe frost. Nearby is Kráľova Skala, a majestic rock formation and one of the traditional viewpoints of the Veľká Fatra. From the rock, you can enjoy a stunning view of the Veľká Fatra ridge and its highest peaks. You can extend the trip by detouring to the nearby Kráľova Studňa mountain hotel for a pleasant refreshment. The return route follows the yellow-marked hiking trail back through Dedošová and Gaderská valleys.

This winter trip covered 52 km by bike and 16 km on foot. The entire journey took 8 hours and offers an unforgettable experience.

The Woodpark team wishes you a safe trip. 🙂
